Glass Walls

Glass ceilings you’ve heard about, but what about glass walls? Glass is metaphoric to its transparency, subtle yet strong enough to stop advancement. But I’m talking about glass walls, self-imposed barriers to your lateral movement. Some of us have mental self-limiting tapes (do you remember cassettes?) that play over and over in our heads, often subconsciously.

When it comes to best business practices, I think one big wall is remorse. The fear of making the wrong decision. The fear of wasting money. Failure. Embarrassment. The tried-and-true is often the perceived safest way to move forward with any decisions. Problem is, the memorized decision pattern becomes stale, inefficient, less progressive and competitive. I would say 9 out of 10 successful CEOs have a curious mind which results in few, if any, glass walls.

Bruce Lee taught us that, “Effort within the mind further limits the mind, because effort implies struggle towards a goal and when you have a goal, a purpose, an end in view, you have placed a limit on the mind.” I think it’s this perceived effort that stops many in our tracks. If I have to generate effort and struggle towards a goal, it may not be “worth it.” Potentially wasted energy. This limiting self talk finds its way up to the top of your body (your brain) that “tells you” that you can’t or shouldn’t do something.

If you’re on this journey of eradicating (or at least reducing) your glass walls, I’m guessing you’ve read and talked with others about this topic. I would surmise your success varies from nothing, to a little bit, to fully transformational. Wherever you are in the process, it comes down to forward momentum, even if it’s slow. If you stop altogether, the glass walls get much stronger and difficult to punch through.

As a commercial appraiser, ask yourself are you exactly where you want to be at this stage in your career? If the answer is no, quickly write down (don’t think about it), just mind dump ideas to transform your business. Ignore if some of the ideas are expensive, difficult or are in the “never going to happen” category. Reframing the perceived required effort can disrupt your negative mental tape, facilitating the potential to achieve the things you want to do. Take your business to the next level or retire. It doesn’t matter the topic. They’re your walls to punch through. Be like Bruce. Punch, punch, punch.
